How the ICON™ Fractional Laser System Can Get Rid of Embarrassing Acne Scars

Did you know acne affects as many as 50 million Americans every year, making it the most common skin disease in the United States? About 85% of people in their teens and early 20s have acne, and plenty of people in their 30s and 40s deal with breakouts as well. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology reports acne is actually on the rise.

Acne doesn’t just affect the skin; it can have devastating emotional and psychological impacts as well. Since most acne breakouts occur on the face, it can take a major toll on how we feel about the way we look, and that can have a huge impact on our self-esteem and self-confidence, even affecting how we interact with other people and how social we are.

But breakouts are just one of the effects of acne. Many people are also left with scars that can persist for the rest of their lives, providing painful and all-too-visible reminders of their acne long after the active breakouts have subsided. The good news is, at Atmosphere Med Spa, we can help reduce or even eliminate the appearance of acne scars using the state-of-the-art ICON™ laser system. And that means if you’re suffering from scarring, we could have the solution you’ve been looking for. Here’s how it works.

Why acne scars form

Scars may be unattractive, especially when they occur on a really visible part of your body like your face. But actually, scar formation is part of your body’s natural healing processes. When your skin is injured, it forms a scar over the injury to protect the area and strengthen the skin to prevent germs and other pathogens from getting into the body. It’s sort of like a “natural bandage” produced by your skin.

After an injury (in this case, by acne), your skin responds to the injury by stimulating the production of collagen, protein fibers that bind together to form strong networks inside our skin. Collagen is good — in fact, it’s a big reason why our skin is firm and resilient. But during scar formation, collagen production focuses on one specific area, laying down a tough network of fibers that can wind up looking and feeling different from the surrounding skin. That’s a scar, and while it does a good job of sealing an injury and protecting the body, it can make us feel really self-conscious. Scar tissue is tougher than the surrounding skin, and it may have a different color too. Some scars are depressed into the skin surface, while others are raised above it. As a result, scars can be difficult to hide even with concealer.

Laser treatment for acne scars

Since scars are formed by dense networks of collagen fibers, the way to reduce the appearance of a scar — or get rid of it all together — is to gently break apart those networks, encouraging the body to heal in a more “normal” way in the area. And that’s just what the ICON™ fractional laser does.

As the ICON's™ special handheld applicator is passed over your skin, it emits pulses of laser energy that penetrate your skin, breaking apart those dense networks so your skin is softer and smoother and scars are less visible. And because the ICON™ is a fractional laser, recovery is a lot faster compared to other types of lasers. Fractional lasers treat tiny areas or columns of skin while leaving the surrounding areas unaffected. That means it takes less time to heal and recover after a treatment, but the treatment itself is just as effective. Plus, the laser’s energy can be adjusted on a patient-by-patient basis to ensure the best possible results every time.
